Te Kaupapa Matua

Overarching Principle

The overarching principle has been developed as part of an overall iwi strategy for Treaty Settlement purposes, which will guide the work and decisions of the Trust.

Mā te maunga te maunga hei tiaki mō te katoa.

Mā te awa te awa hei tiaki mō te katoa.

Mā ngā whenua ngā whenua hei tiaki mō te katoa.

May the mountain be cared and managed for and on behalf of everyone.

May the river be cared and managed for and on behalf of everyone.

May the lands be cared and managed for and on behalf of everyone.
The sub principle is:
Pūpūngia te kākaho, whiria te taura.

Work together through the settlement process to uphold the overarching principle.

Other elements of the iwi strategy that the Trust will be guided by include:

Tikanga

Agreement on how to uphold collective focus

He mana tō tēnā, tō tēnā,
He mana tō te katoa.

Upholding the overarching principle can include:

  • Recognising the diversity of Whanganui nui tonu
  • Supporting our distinctiveness as iwi and hapū of Whanganui nui tonu
  • Maintaining our collective whakapapa as Whanganui nui tonu

Ritenga

Structures that require Crown recognition

Mahia ngā mahi hei painga mōu, mōku, mō tātau katoa

Crown requirements will be achieved by various groups while maintaining clear communication and connection to ensure that the overarching principle is upheld.
